Social Scenes
There are numerous student bars close to The Heights. Two, Gosta Green and the Sack of Potatoes are all based at the BCU Gosta Green Campus and the Aston University Campus. These are a great place to meet new people from both universities and are only three minutes’ walk from The Heights.
Broad Street is well known in Birmingham for its numerous bars and clubs and is very popular with students. They are all within a 25-minute walking distance or a short hop in a taxi.
Being so close to the city centre means you have the best choice of shops on your door step. The Heights is based on Corporation St. which is a main road that runs through the centre of Birmingham. A five-minute walk up this road leads you to an array of high street stores with many roads leading off.
The Bullring is one of Europe’s largest indoor shopping centres and with three floors you will never be short for choice. The Bullring is only 20 minutes’ walk from The Heights and at the back are the famous Birmingham Rag Markets, open Tuesdays to Saturdays.
In Birmingham you are spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment. The NIA, Alexandra Theatre and Hippodrome are all within a 20-minute walk and the NEC is easily accessible via train or Bus.
The National Indoor Arena (NIA) is one of the busiest large scale indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe. Since opening in 1991, it has welcomed visitors to over 30 different sports and an extensive variety of entertainment and music - it can stage concerts, business conferences and exhibitions and is only a 20-minute walk from The Heights.
The NEC has become firmly established as one of Europe’s most prestigious venues for exhibitions and events. It is only a short five-minute train journey away.
The New Alexandra Theatre, commonly known as The Alex, is a theatre on Station Street in Birmingham. It is well known for hosting numerous shows and is only a 20-minute walk from The Heights.
In 2010/11, The Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre welcomed 523,219 paying visitors making it the most popular single theatre in the UK. Based in Birmingham’s famous Chinese Quarter it is within 20 minutes' walk and based next to the local bars and clubs of the Academy centre.
Getting Active
The Heights has its own gym for students staying with Unite, so keeping fit is convenient and doesn’t cost you anything! If you need a wider range of facilities, there are numerous swimming pools, health and racket clubs and associations throughout the city, many of which offer student rates.
Birmingham is home to Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich football clubs. With three large stadiums within the city, you have a choice of top level football venues within 30 minutes of The Heights.
Aston Villa’s Villa Park stadium is located just up the Aston expressway. One of the founding members of the football league, Villa Park is one of the truly great Victorian English football stadiums and is well worth a visit on match day.
The NIA in the city centre has been one of the top sporting arenas holding parts of the Olympics last year and has even hosted indoor show jumping and indoor rowing!

Travel and Transport
Birmingham has fantastic transport links and being based in the city centre means you are close to train, bus and road networks. The local buses are very dependable and offer discounted rates to students, they also provide monthly and termly passes which can be used in the Birmingham and Black Country areas.
There is a National Express Bus Station in Digbeth, only 20 minutes away from The Heights, which offers cheap travel all around the UK.
There are three main train stations in the city centre. New Street Station is the largest and only 20 minutes’ walk from The Heights. Snow Hill and Moor Street Stations are only 15 minutes’ walk.
Birmingham International Airport is one of the largest airports in the UK and is easily accessible by both train and bus. Hop off the train at Birmingham International train station and you’re right at the airport or, alternatively, grab a bus from the city centre.
Local Essentials
There are numerous small supermarkets all within 15 minutes’ walk of The Heights, including two Tesco and a Sainsbury’s. There is a larger Aldi and ASDA both a short bus journey away and the bus stop for these is opposite The Heights.
There are libraries provided by both BCU and Aston University within walking distance of The Heights, and the National Library is only 15 minutes’ walk away.
All major banks can be found on or around Corporation Street within 15 minutes’ walk. Lloyds TSB is based at Dale End and is the nearest high street bank at just five minutes’ walk away. If you study at Aston University there is a NatWest bank based inside the University Guild which is only a three-minute walk from The Heights.
Your Wellbeing
When you start university you will be able to sign up with the university’s GP, providing information on treatment clinic locations and opening times.  However, there are other services close to The Heights.
The local walk-in centre and GP's surgery is based on the ground floor of Boots in the city centre and is only a 10-minute walk away from The Heights. Boots is also your local pharmacy.
In case of emergency, City Hospital is on Dudley Road and is only a short 10-minute journey via taxi.
